The Journal of Aerospace Engineering published Ceralink’s paper, “High Temperature Microwave Dielectric Properties and Processing of JSC-1AC Lunar Simulant” in the October 2013 issue. Ceralink’s team included Shawn Allan, co-op student Brandon Merritt (Alfred University), and Dr. Holly Shulman, in collaboration with Dr. Paul Hintze and intern Brittany Griffin (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) of NASA Kennedy Space Center The research was a result of a successful NASA Phase I SBIR project. http://ascelibrary.org/doi/abs/10.1061/%28ASCE%29AS.1943-5525.0000179
MS&T Abstract 2013 -Enhanced Planar Beta Alumina Solid Electrolytes
Ceralink has developed an enhanced planar beta alumina solid electrolyte (BASE) for sodium based batteries, such as metal halide and sodium sulfur. The demand for high efficiency stationary batteries is on the rise, with the need to tie renewable energy sources into the grid (such as wind and solar) and control energy storage and delivery. The storage capacity of the battery is dictated by the efficiency at which sodium ions move through the solid electrolyte. In general, there has been a tradeoff between density, which relates to strength, and ionic conductivity, which determines efficiency. In order to address this issue, Ceralink applied Microwave Assist Technology (MAT) to the sintering of BASE, resulting in higher retention of sodium ions though fast firing, while also achieving high density. Data showing the results of ionic conductivity testing for MAT vs. conventional sintering along, with the subsequent prototype testing will be presented.
MS&T 2013 - Ceramics and Additive Manufacturing; Exploring Compatibility, Limitations, and Exciting Possibilities
Additive manufacturing (AM) comprises building up parts layer by layer. Several diverse technologies are covered under "Additive Manufacturing," each with unique advantages, materials compatibility, and limitations. Various AM processes will be presented, with specific emphasis on methods for ceramic production such as binder jetting, materials jetting, and material extrusion. Which method to choose depends on the requirements of the final product, e.g. dense or porous, feature resolution, and surface roughness. For example, the ability to directly print ceramic molds for investment casting is of interest to foundries, as it would eliminate several costly steps. Some ceramic AM technology is being used commercially. One small company is using a materials extrusion technique to fill niche demand for ceramics filters and crucibles. This talk will describe and clarify the many building methods under the umbrella of Additive Manufacturing for ceramics, and highlight the need for continued research and development.
MS&T 2013 -2300 °C Ultra-High Temperature Microwave Assist Technology Furnace
Ceralink has built the world's first 2300 °C Microwave Assist Technology furnace. The design is based on a traditional graphite furnace with graphite insulation and heating elements. A microwave transition was specially designed to deliver the microwave energy into the heating chamber via high temperature antenna. The UHT MAT addresses the current processing limitations and scalability for advanced ceramic materials sintering. HIPing is very effective in producing high density materials from starting powders, yet the high pressures and high temperatures make it a costly option. Spark plasma sintering (SPS), can also be effective, yet is limited to very simple, small geometries and is still very costly. This talk will describe the capabilities of this furnace, design considerations, and show results from sintered UHT non-oxide ceramic materials. Ceralink is developing the UHT MAT technology as an effective solution that can be retrofit to nearly any commercial size UHT sintering furnace.
Additive Manufacturing of Ceramics: Compatibility, Limitations, and Possibilities
Presenter: Dr. Holly Shulman, Ceralink Inc. Presented at the 2013 Additive Aerospace Summit, Los Angeles, CA October 18, 2013 For plastics and some metals, AM can produce a ready-to-use part. For ceramics, the additive process is a forming step, similar to dry pressing, casting, or injection molding. After building with AM, the ceramic must have the binder removed and be sintered to the desired density. One of the key challenges for 3D printing is achieving a "green" (unfired) ceramic that when fired, reaches high density for high strength, wear, and corrosion resistance. This presentation deals with the challenges and paths to success for AM of ceramics.
